The Hong Kong Prize

The hongkong prize aims to recognise and support outstanding scientists and research teams, as well as the scientific innovation and transformation they have made in Hong Kong. It is a merit-based award sponsored by the Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited and organized by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation. There are five award fields in total: Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Life and Health, New Materials and New Energy, Advanced Manufacturing, and FinTech. No more than five persons (or groups) may be rewarded in each award field in each year.

The annual HK prize was created in 2008 by Fred Kavli, the Norwegian-born US philanthropist and founder of the Kavli Foundation which supports research in astrophysics, nanoscience and neuroscience. This award recognises the work of exceptional individuals whose innovations have had global impact and is open to people working in any field of science or technology, including applied sciences and engineering. Previous winners include Valerie Browning for her work with the Afar nomads in Ethiopia; Barbara Hofman for transforming the lives of children affected by war in Mozambique; and Enid Hendershot for caring for the poor in India.

As part of the HK Prize, the Hong Kong Philharmonic has been awarded a grant to record and publish Wagner’s Ring Cycle for a full box-set release in 2023. The HK Phil wishes to thank the Hong Kong SAR Government and our Principal Patron, the Swire Group, as well as all supporters for this prestigious recognition.
