The data sgp tool allows educators, parents and students to view their individual student’s growth on the achievement scale by comparing it to that of others of similar performance. Data SGP is a database of student growth percentiles and projections created by Wyoming’s Star Assessment system, updated regularly. It is calculated by analyzing the growth trajectories of students who take identical Star assessments over different years, and then using this information to project future proficiency levels for each individual student. Educators and their data teams can use this information to identify which students are most likely to achieve proficiency, and when, and to determine what steps they need to take to ensure all students make this important achievement milestone.
Each student’s SGP is measured on a 1-99 scale, where higher numbers indicate greater relative growth and lower numbers represent lower relative growth. For example, a student’s SGP of 75 indicates that the student achieved a higher MCAS scale score than about 75% of students who performed like them on previous assessments.
This metric provides teachers, administrators and families with a clear picture of a student’s progress over time in any subject area. By using the SGP metric, teachers can more effectively communicate to their students that they are making progress and what they need to do in order to improve.
SGPs can also be used to compare the performance of a group of students over a period of time, such as by gender, ethnicity or grade level. Similarly, SGPs can be used to identify trends in the performance of a school or district.
Another useful feature of data sgp is the ability to view and download SGPs for individual students. This is particularly useful for educators who want to compare their students’ performance with the performance of a specific group, such as a school cohort or demographic subset. These SGP reports are available in both Window Specific and Current SGP formats.
In the sgpData_LONG data set, the first column, sgptID, provides each student’s unique identification number. The next 5 columns, SS_2013, SS_2014, SS_2015, and SS_2016, provide the student’s scale scores on each Star assessment in those years. The last column, sgpData_instructor_number, is an anonymized lookup table that provides the instructor number associated with each student test record. This information can be used to create teacher aggregates by subject and content area over one academic year.
