In line with the sustainability theme of this year’s ceremony, Britain’s Prince William wore an old green blazer from Alexander McQueen as he and other celebrity presenters walked a “green carpet” to deliver their presentations. He said that the solutions from the five winners — which ranged from solar-powered dryers to reduce food waste to making electric car batteries cleaner — showed that “hope does remain” amid the climate change crisis. The other celebrities included actors Cate Blanchett, Donnie Yen, and Lana Condor, as well as Australian wildlife conservationist Robert Irwin.

This year’s prize money was the highest to date for the Singapore literary award, which has 12 top prizes in its three main categories of fiction, non-fiction and poetry, each worth up to $10,000. In a first for the program, five writers were shortlisted in two or more categories. Clara Chow was the only writer to be shortlisted in both English and Chinese poetry, making her the first in the award’s history of 30 years to do so.

Besides the cash prizes, this year’s winners also received an opportunity to compete for the “readers’ favorite” prize of 1,000 Singapore dollars (US$719). The prize is presented by the Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), which was established by a $1 million donation from Confucian scholar Alan Chan. It promotes the writing of books that champion mindsets and values important to Singapore, such as equality, diversity, religious harmony, meritocracy, pragmatism, and resilience.

The first prize was won by Daryl Qilin Yam for his book, “At Home in a Strange Land.” The other winning works were by Ali bin Salim, Pan Zheng Lei, and rmaa cureess. All the shortlisted works are available at public libraries in Singapore.

The winners of the prize were announced in a star-studded awards ceremony hosted by Mediacorp Campus on Tuesday. The 2023 winners are Accion Andina, GRST, WildAid Marine Programme, S4S Technologies, and Boomitra. The event was held in Singapore, which has become a hub for cutting-edge innovation and entrepreneurship. It is the first time that the award has been held in Asia. Guests included actresses Cate Blanchett and Lana Condor, actors Donnie Yen and Nomzano Mbatha, as well as singers One Republic and Bastille. Former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern attended as a trustee of the prize board. The ceremony was broadcast globally.
