This year’s hk prize will be presented in September. The winner will be announced at a special ceremony hosted by the Royal Asiatic Society. The HKIE will provide the winning higher education institution with a certificate and cash prize of HK$5,000. Moreover, the university will be encouraged to publish the names and relevant information of the successful candidates on its website for public reference.
Lui Che-woo created this award to recognize individuals whose actions advance world civilisation and inspire others towards building a harmonious society. Winners in each of the three categories receive both a monetary prize and a trophy that represents Hong Kong’s iconic pearl and jade amulet, which has positive connotations in both Chinese and Western cultures. They may also take part in seminars and research internships at Hong Kong universities and laboratories.
Despite the pandemic fears, the organizers of the hk prize decided to hold their annual awards ceremony at a studio instead of the typical star-studded venue. The resulting ceremony was quick and efficient, with the winners being announced within 11 minutes of the nominations being released. Better Days directed by Derek Tsang won three categories and To My Nineteen-Year-Old Self starring Jackson Yee took the other three.
The HK Prize is open to engineering students of all nationalities, with the exception of Malaysian and Singaporean students, who are required to submit their applications through the respective universities in their home countries. To apply for the HK Prize, candidates must be nominated by their higher education institutions’ Head of Engineering Department. Each higher education institution can only nominate a maximum of five engineering students. The nominated candidates should be in the final year of their Higher Diploma or Associate Degree programmes and have a good academic track record. The nominated students must also have a good command of written and spoken English and the ability to work independently. In addition, the candidates should be able to communicate with people from different cultural backgrounds. The application deadline is 1 February 2019.
